History of Saint Patrick

Little is known of Patrick's early life, though it is known that he was born in Roman Britain in the fourth century, into a wealthy Romano-British family. His father and grandfather were deacons in the Christian church in Ireland. At the age of sixteen, he was kidnapped by Irish raiders and taken captive to Ireland as a slave.[12] It is believed he was held somewhere on the west coast of Ireland, possibly Mayo, but the exact location is unknown. According to his Confession, he was told by God in a dream to flee from captivity to the coast, where he would board a ship and return to Britain. Upon returning, he quickly joined the Church in Auxerre in Gaul and studied to be a priest.[citation needed]

In 432, he again said that he was called back to Ireland, though as a bishop, to Christianise the Irish from their native polytheism. Irish folklore tells that one of his teaching methods included using the shamrock to explain the Christian doctrine of the Trinity to the Irish people. After nearly thirty years of evangelism, he died on 17 March 461, and according to tradition, was buried at Downpatrick. Although there were other more successful missions to Ireland from Rome, Patrick endured as the principal champion of Irish Christianity and is held in esteem in the Irish church.

Saint Patrick's Day (The Festival of Patrick); is a cultural and religious holiday celebrated on 17 March. It commemorates Saint Patrick, the most commonly recognized of the patron saints of Ireland, and the arrival of Christianity in Ireland. It is observed by the Catholic Church, the Anglican Communion (especially the Church of Ireland), the Eastern Orthodox Church and Lutheran Church. Saint Patrick's Day was made an official feast day in the early seventeenth century, and has gradually become a celebration of Irish culture in general.

The day is generally characterized by the attendance of church services, wearing of green attire and the lifting of Lenten restrictions on eating, and drinking alcohol, which is often proscribed during the rest of the season.

Saint Patrick's Day is a public holiday in the Republic of Ireland, Northern Ireland, Newfoundland and Labrador and in Montserrat. It is also widely celebrated by the Irish diaspora, especially in places such as Great Britain, Canada, the United States, Argentina, Australia, and New Zealand, among others. Today, St. Patrick's Day is probably the most widely celebrated saint's day in the world.

Washington's Birthday is the official name designated to what many of us know as President's Day. During the month of February the birthday of two of our greatest President's takes place. Both George Washington who was born on Feb. 22nd and Abraham Lincoln born on Feb. 12th.

However, Washington's birthday has been publicly celebrated since he was in office, before Abraham Lincoln was even born. Much of the debate over the name of the holiday springs from the fact that state's can follow their own holidays how they see fit and many of them chose to also honor Lincoln, calling the celebration President's Day.

It was in 1968 that the term President's Day came up for legal consideration in the Congress but was shot down, though the holiday was moved to fall between the two President's birthdays. Again in the 1980's there was a resurgence of the term with advertisers which solidfied the holiday name in American culture. Today, few Americans perfer to call the holiday Washington's Birthday in lieu of President's Day.

Challenging the midsize status quo.
In 2008, GM released the seventh generation Malibu and turned the midsize car world on its head. Universally praised for its modern styling and beautiful interior, the Malibu was a hit. Not content to merely rely on its past awards and allow competitors to catch up, GM is introducing the world to the all-new, eighth-generation Chevrolet Malibu. The Malibu Eco (MSRP $25,235) is the first model of the new eighth-generation Malibu lineup. Further enhancing the sporty feel of the exterior, the Malibu has been given a coupe-like silhouette and interesting details like the Camaro-inspired taillamps. With Chevrolet’s dual-port grille, large, swept-back headlamps and standard 17-inch alloy wheels, the Malibu brings an athletic sensibility to the midsize market. A segment first, the exterior of the Malibu Eco is equipped with an active shutter system that automatically closes at speed to reduce aerodynamic drag.

The new Malibu Eco is the first Chevrolet vehicle equipped with the fuel-saving eAssist™ technology. The eAssist system is teamed with an efficient and lightweight Ecotec 2.4-liter direct-injected four-cylinder engine that produces 184 hp. The Malibu also uses a next-generation six-speed automatic transmission. The eAssist system uses power stored in an air-cooled lithium-ion battery to provide an electrical boost when needed, optimizing engine and transmission performance. The system uses regenerative braking to provide the battery with 15kW of electricity. The 115V battery and 15kW motor-generator unit can provide a boost of up to 15 hp during heavy acceleration. The eAssist system also allows the use of electricity when stopped, instead of gasoline, by way of a smooth and automatic engine start-stop system. GM estimates that this system will allow the Malibu Eco to achieve 37 mpg highway – better than any non-hybrid midsize sedan.

The all-new interior of the 2013 Malibu has been equally enhanced. The cabin is roomier, quieter and more comfortable than its predecessor. Thanks in part to the wider wheelbase, Chevrolet was able to equip the Malibu with a dual cockpit design that is three inches wider than the previous generation car. The new Malibu features metallic, chrome or wood interior accents located around the shifter, on the door panels and steering wheel, and around the center stack and instrument cluster. The Malibu is also equipped with an ice blue ambient lighting system that bathes the cabin in a soft glow. The ambient lighting complements the ice blue illumination on the center stack dials and along the instrument panel. Contrasting French stitching, strategic applications of noise-deadening materials and soft-touch surfaces help to enhance the Malibu’s refinement.

To make sure the 2013 Malibu Eco handles as well as it looks, it has been engineered to deliver ride and handling that are beyond best in class, aiming for parity with more expensive sports sedans. A solid body structure that’s 20 percent stiffer than previous models allows for precise tuning and dynamic vehicle control. The suspension is composed of a MacPherson strut front end with a multi-link setup in the rear with aluminum components and a hollow stabilizer bar to reduce weight. The new Malibu also features large, 11.7-inch ventilated disc brakes in front, and 11.5-inch solid rear brakes, which are expected to deliver class-leading stopping distances.

An isolated engine cradle working in tandem with the stiff body structure helps keep noise and vibration from entering the car’s cabin. This, along with features like acoustic-laminated glass, makes the new Malibu the quietest car Chevrolet has ever made. To further isolate occupants from the harshness outside the windows, 16 expanding-foam acoustic baffles are placed in strategic locations throughout the car. When the car body is being passed through the ovens in the paint shop, the heated foam expands to fill the body panels, providing acoustic insulation for the cabin.

The all-new 2013 Malibu Eco was not only designed to be the most refined and best performing midsize sedan on the market, it was designed to be one of the safest as well. Deer Mating Season Is Here:

Fall means a substantial increase in deer-to-vehicle collisions. These accidents can cause serious injury and damage.

* Check Your Antifreeze/Coolant
Antifreeze helps control the temperature of a vehicle’s engine. Since it remains liquid and does not freeze in cold temperatures, antifreeze also helps protect the engine during extreme cold starts. Servicing your vehicle’s cooling system according to your vehicle manufacturer’s recommendations can help you avoid costly repairs down the line. Check your owners’ manual for how often it should be replaced.

* Watch the Wiper Blades
The normal life expectancy for most windshield wiper blades is six to 12 months. Check and clean the windshield wiper blades or replace them if necessary. Checking and replacing them as needed can improve visibility to help avoid a very dangerous situation on the road -- particularly in snowy and stormy conditions.

* Make Sure the Battery is Strong
A weak battery is less reliable and can take longer to start your car on cold mornings. In fact, a weak battery could lose about one third of its power or more in colder conditions (e.g. below 32 degrees Fahrenheit). Make sure that connections are tight and free of corrosion and have your battery tested to ensure it has ample power to withstand the cold. Start the car with the heater, lights and window defrosters turned off to minimize battery strain.

* In Case of Emergency
Maintain a vehicle emergency kit including a first aid kit, jumper cables, flashlight, bottled water, extra blankets, gloves and hat, granola/energy bars, duct tape, and a can of Fix-a-Flat. You never know when you will need these essentials.

* Clean the Engine Air Filter
The engine air filter is a vehicle’s lung. A clean air filter helps the engine combust an optimal air-to-fuel mixture, making it run more smoothly and efficiently. When your air filter is clogged, your engine has to work harder and therefore is not operating at peak performance. Check your vehicle owner’s manual to find out when it needs to be replaced.

* Pay Attention to Oil Grade
Motor oil lubricates the engine, keeping it cool and reducing the friction between moving parts. As motor oil circulates, it also cleans away harmful dirt and contaminants. In general, you should use the lightest grade of oil your vehicle’s manufacturer recommends for the conditions you drive in. During the winter, this may mean an even lighter grade than usual. Most vehicle owner’s manual specifies the correct grade of motor oil for your vehicle during certain driving conditions and seasons.

* Keep an Eye on Tire Pressure
Under-inflated tires create extra friction where the rubber meets the road. Improperly inflated tires also wear unevenly, which can impact your vehicle’s traction on the road and possibly lead to a dangerous blowout. Check your tire pressure regularly and make sure all of them are filled to the correct level -- and remember your spare tire, which can lose pressure in the cold.

Proper tire pressure is vehicle-specific. Tire pressure information for a vehicle is found on a decal typically in the vehicle’s door jamb or in the vehicle owner’s manual. Do not follow the pressure listed on the sidewall of the tire, as this number is specific to the tire, not the vehicle.

The Chevrolet brand turns 100 this year, and unlike some people that like to hide their age after a certain point, the automaker is out to tell the world. Among the many celebrations planned for this occasion is the presentation a special 2012 Centennial Edition Corvette with a black color scheme and unique design elements.

The 2012 Centennial Edition will be available as a special package on all Corvette models, including the Grand Sport that features a 6.2-liter V8 pumping out 430HP, the Z06 that comes equipped with a 505HP 7.0-liter V8 and the flagship ZR1 with its 638-hp supercharged LS9 V8 engine.

The special package comes exclusively in Carbon Flash Metallic, with satin-black graphics and unique Centennial Satin Black wheels and red brake calipers. The lightweight wheels come with a thin red outline around the perimeter of its surface on the Z06, and are specific to the respective Corvette models, including 18-inch/19-inch for Coupe, Convertible and Grand Sport; and 19-inch/20-inch for Z06 and ZR1.

Other exclusive features include a graphic logo featuring an image of Louis Chevrolet that appears on the B-pillars, the center caps of the wheels, and the center of the steering wheel, while the crossed flags badge contains a small adaptation, with “100” in place of the traditional fleur-de-lis symbol.

The black and red color theme is continued inside with the Ebony leather-wrapped instrument panel and doors complemented by red stitching on the steering wheel, seats, console and shifter. You may be aware of incidents of fraud in the auto industry. Recently, the FBI's Internet Crime Complaint Center issued an alert about an increase in online scams that target consumers looking to buy vehicles online. In most instances of fraud, a consumer views a listing for a vehicle and contacts the seller through an email address in the ad. The seller responds via email telling the consumer that they need to sell the car quickly because they are in the military and about to be deployed, are moving, etc. Next, the seller asks the buyer to conduct the transaction through another website for security reasons, but reassures the buyer that they are protected through a major internet company (e.g. ebay). They are then instructed to wire funds to an account. Sometimes these criminals pose as employees and conduct a live chat to answer questions.

Unfortunately, the listing the consumer sees is either taken from another website or completely falsified, and the protection plan on the consumer's money transfer is phony. Once a consumer realizes what has happened it's too late.

Know Your Motor Oil: GM’s New dexos

If you drive a 2011 General Motors vehicle (and if you buy a GM vehicle in coming years), there is or will be a new motor oil in your car or truck.

In October of this year, General Motors began licensing motor oil that meets a new proprietary (i.e. GM-only) specification, trademarking that specification/license as “dexos” (the lowercase is, oddly enough, correct).

So what does that mean for you, the driver? “First of all, dexos is a motor oil specification, not a recipe,” noted Eric Johnson, senior project engineer with GM Powertrain-North America’s Fuels & Lubricants division. “It’s the first common engine oil specification General Motors has ever developed that will encompass all our companies in all our markets.”

While the specification might not be a recipe, it is stringent enough that virtually all motor oil blenders have responded by creating dexos-spec products that are made of synthetic motor oil. That’s right. When it comes time to change your oil, you’ll need to use a synthetic motor oil.

That means, for starters, that your oil changes will likely be more expensive than in the past. But it also means you’ll be getting the ultimate in protection, a motor oil that can last the duration of the extended oil change intervals recommended by your Engine Oil Life System (EOLS), the little reminder in your car that tells you when it’s time to change the oil.

The dexos specification was first conceived in 2006 and developed in 2007. Motor oil blenders were apprised of the specifics in 2008 and 2009, and informed that in order to meet factory warranty requirements, products meeting the dexos spec would need to be licensed by GM beginning this year. (There are actually two dexos specifications: dexos-1 for gasoline engines and dexos-2 for diesel engines. For 2011 vehicles, only dexos-1 is being installed at the factory.)

According to Johnson, GM had several goals in developing the specification. In addition to creating a common specification that would work across all brands in all markets, GM also wanted a product with improved fuel economy and fuel economy retention when compared with existing products. The dexos spec was also designed so the motor oil can function as a hydraulic fluid, an increasingly common design element in GM engines that use variable valve timing. And, the company hopes to further “optimize” drain intervals by increasing motor oil robustness through the dexos spec.

“When used with the EOLS, we will be able to increase drain intervals and reduce the amount of oil used during the lifetime of a vehicle,” Johnson said. “The EOLS will take into account the better quality of dexos products.”

So, the long and short of it is your new GM vehicle will, for warranty purposes, require a new, high-tech synthetic motor oil that will protect your new baby better than ever before. Plus, you’ll likely be able to drive it even further between routine oil changes if you follow the EOLS. True, you might have to pay a little more for your oil change, but in the long run that sounds like a fair trade to us.

The Dangers of Falling leaves

As we head into the fall, leaves will begin to accumulate on the roadways, which can cause slippery and hazardous driving conditions. As the temperature falls, wet leaves can turn the roadways as dangerous as ice or snow covered. Also, leaves can cover and hide road markings, making it difficult to navigate.

If you hit a patch of wet leaves, you can lose traction. Braking and steering may be difficult. Be aware of this hazard, slow down while braking and steering carefully.

SAFETY FIRST:

Keep leaves from accumulating around the wiper area and under the hood. These leaves will find their way into your heater vent system and may damage the heater motor or will eventually decompose.

Adverse Weather

Fall is a time of adverse weather. Sunny days can give way to frosty nights, and sudden showers may leave roads slick. Make sure your wiper blades, tires and brakes are all in good working order. If you find frost on your windshield in the morning, take the time to clean it off so you have full visibility.

Wildlife

Autumn is a time of greater activity in the animal world. It's mating season for deer, elk, moose and other large mammals. Bears are getting ready to hibernate and while foraging may be distracted. Slow down and be extra alert if you live in an area where these animals roam. Get in the habit of scanning the road ahead. If you see movement or an animal on the side of the road, decrease your speed. Warn motorists ahead of you of a possible hazard by flashing your lights three times. This Halloween make sure to keep an eye on the kids at all times. Cell phones are everywhere, everyone seems to have one. Make sure that your child has a pre-programmed cell phone with him/her if they go out and be sure that all important numbers are already there and ready for use.

Make Halloween a fun, safe and happy time for your kids and they'll carry on the tradition that you taught them to their own families some day! If you can't take them yourself, see if another parent or two can. Know the route your kids will be taking, and let them know that they are to check in with you every hour, by phone or by stopping back at home. Make sure that they know not to deviate from the planned route so that you always know where they will be.

Teach your kids about not getting into strangers cars or talking to strangers, no matter what the person says to them. Explain to them as simply as you can the potential for danger. Advise them what to do should this happen, to scream as loud as they can to draw attention and to run away as fast as they can to someplace safe.

Help your young child pick out or make a costume that will be safe. Make sure that it's fire proof or treated with fire retardant. If they are wearing a mask of any kind make sure that the eye holes are large enough for good peripheral vision. Select costumes that won't get in the way when they are walking, which could cause them to trip and cause injury.

Be sure to show your children know how to cross a street properly. Make sure that if you have more than one child, they know to take the hand of the younger child when they cross a street.

Get on the internet and check your local state website for sex offenders. Almost every state has one, just do a search for your state sex offender site. Look up your zip code and it should have a list of registered offenders in your area that includes street addresses. Make sure that your kids stay away from these houses!

Each year it is estimated that nearly 200,000 women will be diagnosed with breast cancer and more than 40,000 will die. Approximately 1,700 men will also be diagnosed with breast cancer and 450 will die each year. The evaluation of men with breast masses is similar to that in women, including mammography.

Women in the United States get breast cancer more than any other type of cancer except for skin cancer. It is second only to lung cancer as a cause of cancer death in women.

Obviously no woman wants to receive this diagnosis, but hearing the words "breast cancer" doesn't always mean an end. It can be the beginning of learning how to fight, getting the facts and finding hope.
